Would You Hire Someone With An Exposed Tattoo Or Body Piercing?

A lot of places won’t hire people unless their tattoo or body piercing is covered.

Nope, can’t respect their own body… what other compromises for the sake of vanity will they entertain…
Plus unless you are in the business of T&P what sort of image are you trying to convey? Like attracts like.

  2. serenity… says:

If I had my own business, open to the public, I would consider hiring someone with an exposed tattoo or body piercing. I would not hire them if the exposed tattoo was offensive in any way, such as nudity or any hateful imagery, but I wouldn’t mind if the tattoo was a neutral image. As for body piercings, I’d have to consider the amount and type of piercings. I would not refuse to hire simply because there is an exposed piercing, but I would not automatically hire anyone with piercings either. I think I’d limit the number of non-ear, cranial piercings to two or three. Ear piercings, regardless of the number or type, are fine with me.

  3. Sarah says:

I would not! Alot of people don’t want to see them and those people are customers that you want back….

  4. Mister W says:

Yes, as long at they weren’t offensive.

  5. Lisa the Pooh says:

If I were running a nightclub and needed dancers or bouncers I would probably prefer people with tattoos, however in the business world it is best to keep your personal life to yourself and tattoos express at least one personal value. You lose the “me too advantage” with many people when you expose tattoos. If a client shows you his or her tattoo, a previously hidden tattoo can be shown but as a rule I would never hire someone with a tattoo.

  6. viewable m says:

Yes I would and I do not see any reason why I shouldn’t. even though I know very well that a lot of places will not hire someone with tattoos or piercings. To me it’s not the outside that counts. It’s who people are inside that matters and if they are willing to commit themselves to the job and have the right qualifications I have no problem what so ever. Judging people because of their outside is unfortunately something that happens far to much and it only shows that people are prejudiced to what they consider not to be normal. What should matter is who people are inside and how they behave not the way they look outside. Tattoos and piercings are one the many expressions of someones inner self and it shows ones personal individuality and that is what makes people so beautiful and interesting. We are all different and we express each other in all different ways and that’s what makes us unique.

Obviously, the answer is: that depends. What is the nature of business? Who are your customers?
If you’re in business, the hard truth is that you’re there to make money. And you make money by encouraging people to buy what you have to sell them, build loyalty, and create an atmosphere where they will return in the future…the basic equation. My clients are middle aged, and MIddle America, for the most part, so when I hire people, it’s a matter of how many and how obvious the tattoos and piercings are.
Is a small tatoo on a shoulder, wrist, or ankle offensive to MOST people? No. Is a small nose jewel or thin eyebrow ring offensive to MOST people? No. Labrets, tongue piercings, and even “plug” style ear piercings can be displayed in good taste.
However…large tattoos…neck and face tattoos…offensive images and wording…too MANY visible tattoos…that might be a problem. Same things with piercings. Nose rings like those seen on livestock, multiple lip piercings, and dozens of earrings worn at once just wouldn’t cut it in my workplace.
Now, I would never PERSONALLY deny anyone’s desire to express themselves–but when their appearance creates an atmosphere that makes my customers uncomfortable–that’s where I draw the line.
A tattoo or a piercing is not a disability or a medical condition–lest someone put up the argument that there are other kinds of physical characteristics that might “turn off” clients. Tattoos and piercings are voluntary.
I’m pretty liberal about hiring people–I try to look at what’s on the inside just as much as the outside–but an appearance that calls attention to itself in the extreme is not going to make my customers return.

I have several tattoos. (12) and have had them for years. I never went on an interview where i wasn’t offered the job. I cover my tats for the interview, then after hired show/tell. It is against the law to discriminate against body art under the fair labor act but it does happen prior to hiring. After you have the job, if you do it well, they won’t fire you.

  9. skipster says:

Depends if they are working in a professional atmosphere then no, but if they are applying for like something that is more casual than professional then I don’t see why not. I have tattoo’s and I work for a bank but they are where no one could see them. having tattoo’s is not something bad. Tattoo’s don’t tell you who a person really is.

  10. Joel Q says:

yes i would hire smeone with tattoos and body piercings i have 2 tattoos that u can see they are both on my wrists and i also have my eyebrow pierced when i was first hired at a gas station they told me i can have it as long as i cover it up that was wrong and felt they was discriminating me because of what i perfer

  11. heidi says:

It depends on the business and its customer base. I have no personal aversion to them, but many businesses have conservative clientele that are offended by these things, and as a manager my goal would be to further the growth of the business.

  12. Mystery Meat says:

depends on the job. Mostly I would, but if the company prides itslef on having a good appearance and professional image, then probably not

  13. Chris K says:

Are we living in the same country?
Tattoos and piercings are so common, it would be difficult to get employees if you were too strict about it. Of course, no one usually hires someone who’s tattooed and pierced like a circus freak..but other wise it’s OK. Maybe in rural conservative States, it might be a problem, but not in most places.
How many and what kind do you have?

  14. lilyann says:

Depends on what kind of job it is – receptionist at a lawyer’s office – NO. Salesgirl at a clothing shop – yes. Maitre d’ at a fine hotel or restaurant – no. Construction – yes.

  15. ariadne_ says:

I work with plenty of people who have exposed tattoos and piercings, but I would not hire one.
The human body is beautiful just as it is. Why disfigure it with painful adornments?

  16. sandisla says:

It really depends on the type of business and what the “art” is.
If it is a law firm, no exposed tats or piercings (except for 1 set of lobe piercings).
If you’re working at a place like Spencers, it doesn’t matter.
Fast food joint? If it is graphic, no. Otherwise, doesn’t matter.
High class restaurant; lobe piercings only.
I work at a family restaurant as a waitress. I have 2 tattoos (one of which is covered at all times and the other, you won’t notice unless you’re really looking for it as it is under my watch) and 7 piercings (all in my ears but I generally just wear the cartilage). It doesn’t matter as much.

  17. Zoer says:

so long as the work environment permitted it i dont see why not, so long as the tattoo isnt of vulgar content, and the piercing isnt disfiguring.

  18. amosunkn says:

Although having or not having a tatoo is not as important as work habits. Generally Tatoos give off the wrong impression. Depending on what type of business I ran, I would not hire someone with a revealing tattoo. It’s just not professional looking. If you have a naked lady on your forearm, then showing people through houses is not an appropriate place for you. Now if you have a small rose on your ankle… that’s debatable. It’s just depending on the job, and the tattoo I guess. If I had a restaurant I would most likely hire someone with a tattoo as long as they weren’t covered head to toe! It would be hard to hire someone with an offensive type of tattoo, no matter what.

  19. Troopers says:

    No I wouldn’t.

  20. stinkypa says:

i have worked for companies like that and they are trying to protect their image

  21. dorihnnt says:

it shouldn’t matter what you look like on the outside, It matters to an employer how your work habits are and if you are good at your job.

  22. Danibair says:

A business is supposed to present an image. Visible tattoos and wierd peircings may not fit with that image. In my line, I would have a problem with it. Others may not need to be so choosy.

  23. aboukir2 says:

    depends on the working place
in a tattoo shop,in a car garage,in a homo bar can be OK
    in an medical office NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  24. ko2ke says:

    As a general rule no.
There are conceivable situations… marketing to goths, advertising a tatoo artist… but I get the feeling those aren’t the sorts of jobs you’re thinking about.
Otherwise, it would have to be tasteful there would have to be some overwhelming justification — like a little flag tatoo on a former Olympian.

  25. lindanja says:

It would depend on the job that I would be hiring them for. If it a place that the public could see them and they are the first contact with the customers than I would not hire them unless they cover up the tattoo or body piercing. If it was as a delivery person or running machinery that the typical customer will not see than as long as it does not interfere with the job it does not matter. Even though both tattoo and piercings are more popular with the young, people still do not like them. I have two tattoo that I purposely got high on my arms because of where I want to go career wise. A lot of the younger people do not think about the consequences before they get tattoos or piercings.

  26. andy says:

“yes” I would hire someone with piercings or tattoos. If they have the skills to do the job, it shouldn’t matter what the outside looks like.

  27. Are says:

In businesses, i can see why they wouldn’t, because the employees are the IMAGE of the store, and some companies just straight up don’t like the image it gives off. Me personally, at least for the type of businesses I’m familiar with running, I would, but there are limits there as well. Also, people with tatoo’s should know the risks, and if you’re only getting 1 or 2 tat’s, then being well placed and easy to cover up, could just land you that job.

  28. Melander says:

Only in a TATOO SHOP…AND >>>only if the ‘TATOO’ really stands out …….( expresses the SHOPS mandateinterests<<<<……)….

  29. Dr.Giorgios Demetrious Loyka says:

T0 be honest. No Why Because my customers are very weary of some one that arrived on there premise with Pearce are tattoo. Also what they wear and how they look. But my Son is 18 years old and doing is national service he as a tattoo on his back and also he ear pierced, i did mind.but accept it.And know he wants to tattoo done on his arms. i told him NO because he mite have a problem getting a good job. I’m is farther he can do what he please But there nothing wrong in telling him to think before he dose it,

  30. Jason J says:

Well Dr.Giorgios Demetrious Loyka, if you’re going to try a put a negative slant on tattooing please learn how to spell and write correctly first. A lot of simple minded people out there are ‘weary’ of tattooed people for reasons that escape me. I have my full left arm sleeved and luckily have never had to deal with any ‘agro’ from my manager at work because I know how to do my job and I know how to do it well. The public have not once mentioned or complained about me.

  31. Monnanon says:

I would hope that a lot of places would still hire people with tattoos and piercings. I got my nose pierced in my first year of uni and the only compromise i had to make when i found a job was to wear a stud and not my nose ring. This was also a choice I made on my own, not a work enforced one. I work as a receptionist in a hotel so if my work has no problem with my piercings or a coworkers tattoos when we are on the frontline when it comes to customers then i don’t see why other businesses should bother.
It seems to stem from people finding tattoos and piercings threatening. I’ve had one little kid ask me if it hurt, (I didnt lie I said yes of course it did hehe) but apart from that no one bats an eyelid. It would be different if I had an obviously offensive tattoo like a swear word or something. My work has even given me the go ahead to get a industrial peircing in my ear.
My husband has a tattoo on his forearm and again his work do not bother, Im not sure if businesses would frown upon it if he tried to get work elsewhere but in my mind I would not want to work for a company that felt the need to dismiss me due to a piercing/ tattoo/hair colour alone.

  32. Jessi says:

I don’t see why not, if the worker is capable and eager. As long as they don’t have tons of piercings or any facial tattoos and nothing is offensive.

I have several piercings and I don’t understand why I should be discriminated. People are saying we can’t “Respect our bodies”

You can’t respect our decisions? We aren’t doing anything that harms you! Why should you care?

  33. JayRocc says:

What year are we in that people still discriminate against stupid things like someone’s outer appearance? Might as well judge them on the color of their skin right? Shouldn’t it matter more about the person inside. Looks can be deceiving. I have over 20 tattoos and get judged everywhere I go, mostly negatively, but at my old workplace (Albertsons grocery stores) never once had a customer complain about my tattoos on my hands and neck. If anything I always got compliments on them. People need to focus more on the work that gets done and not stupid bullshit like tattoos. I would hire a whole crew of people with visible tattoos since they aren’t afraid to be themselves and simple minded like the rest of you drones out there that are like fucking robots day in and day out. Don’t be afraid to express yourself because in the end it’s all you have. You can always lose that dream job, car, money, clothes, etc. But your individuality always stays with you no matter what. It’s 2010 for God’s sake people it is time to stop the discrimination.

  34. Roy Wilkerson says:

What are you guys, dinosaurs? I’m in my 20′s, and it seems like nearly everyone in my generation has a tattoo or piercing at this point. Maybe some people are still prudish about body art, but hopefully when you’re all dead, we can have doctors, lawyers, and even presidents with a little ink.

  35. ARIEL says:

HEY I AGREE I GOT TATTOOS AND PIERCING TO BE UNIQUE AND NOT TO BE JUDGED FOR IT. BUT I STILL DO! I CANT FIND A JOB THAT WILL HIRE ME BECAUSE OF IT AND ITS VERY FRUSTRATING. I AM PROFESSIONAL THE WAY I WRITE AND SPEAK. I AM BILINGUAL AND HAVE MANY EXPERIENCES. IF ANY OF YOU PEOPLE ARE HIRING PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. SACRAMENTO, CA

    Thank You

  36. elisabeth c says:

i don’t own a business but tattoos and peircings have become a way of life so i would definately hire ppl with tattoos and percings. any way tattoos and peircings are hott i love them got plenty of both want more but need money.they both are soo addicting!

  37. Matt says:

    Depends on the business.

For my Roofing Company I will hire people with Tat’s, but not on the face or neck.
If they can be covered with a shirt it’s OK with me.

My restaurants is a different story, I will not hire people with Tats to work waiting tables, or in the front. The cooks and dishwashers can have Tats but they need to be covered with shirts.

I don’t have any tat’s or piercings. Men should not wear ear-rings, they are for women. I don’t understand men with ear-rings, what do you do look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Wow do I look pretty today?” I don’t get it.

Why do people get a “Tribal” Tattoo? To me they just look ugly. Natural skin is much more attractive to me. When I am at the beach I don’t look at the ladies with tats, only the natural ladies. This is my opinion.
God made us what we are and my body is not an art canvas to paint images on.

The Rub-On Tats are OK with me, as you can simply wash them off.

My standards are very high when it comes to picking a mate. I would never date a girl with Tats in a serious relationship.

Who would want to watch The Victoria’s Secret Models walking down the runway with Tats all over their bodies? Not many people.

People with Tats please don’t feel offended, it’s just the way I was raised.

My father was a US Marine in WWII & Korea War and he was pressured to get a Tat in the Service but he never did it. And that is in the 1940s-1950s.

Nobody in my family of 5 has a tattoo.

I am happy with my life as a natural human and I don’t feel I need to get a tat to look tough or cool. I don’t wear jewelry of any kind. I don’t even wear my gold Rolex watch anymore because I’m concerned some Crackhead will shoot or stab me for it.

If your young and thinking about getting a tattoo, don’t do it. You may regret it, they are so hard to remove.

You could get HIV AIDS or other problems from contaminated needles.

Ask to check all the tools they will be using on you and make sure they are all cleaned in the autoclave. Also make sure the ink they use on you is fresh and not re-cycled from other clients.

  38. To the person above me:

I can see that you are a very judgmental person. Not only do you make absolutely no attempt to understand others’ choices that you disagree with, but you use words like “ugly” and such to describe people.

I find it disgusting when people tan too much, but if they do a great job working, I wouldn’t refuse to hire them. Tanning is a choice similar to getting a tattoo or piercing, but you don’t see people judging them for looking like a carrot.

As for when you go to the beach: I’m just the opposite. I’m *only* attracted to women with tattoos. I find people with blank skin to be boring and uninteresting. I feel like they’re not at all creative. See how that works?

I don’t have earrings and I’m also straight, but I found your comment about men with earrings to sound homophobic and insulting.

Sorry to say, but no god made us. But now I get where you’re coming from; you’re one of those religious nuts.

I’m a business owner myself. I’m 21 and I net about $620,000 a year, depending on how sales go. Oh, and I have several visible tattoos. None of my clients care!

You’re also ill informed about the HIV thing. Most tattoo places will use a new needle or will use an autoclave to sterilize needles. There is no HIV risk at a reputable tattoo shop. In fact, did you know that if someone with HIV scrapes their knee on the sidewalk and bleeds all over and then you immediately scraped your knee in the same spot, you might not get HIV? The virus dies pretty quickly once outside of the body. Complications from tattoos are not very common. Please learn what you’re talking about before vomiting bullshit.

My standards are high too: I would never date an uninked girl. How’s that sound? You claim that people should be natural, but I’m sure if your women didn’t shave or put on makeup, you wouldn’t like that either.

I can’t wait until your generation dies off.

  39. Ben says:

These comments kill me. Personally I would have no issues hiring someone with tattoos regardless of where they are. That being said content is a bit of an issue, I figure as long as none of them are derogatory why judge?

On a side note; I have a few tattoos (including a sleeve) and have not been discriminated against at all when applying for a job, even if I tell my future employers before being hired. I work in a very professional environmentand have not found body art to be a hinderance at all. In fact, most of the time I find the exact opposite is the case. Clients/ customers generally have ink themselves or have a relative with ink and are very eager to swap stories!

Kudos to the person above me!

  40. Lord Johnson says:

    To Matt-

You are a prime example of someone I would murder. Suck a choad, you fuck.

  41. Algonquin J. Calhoun says:

Never. Anyone with at tattoo that is visible would put of my customers.
How anyone would do such, to lower their work ration, means they are sub-par intelligent.
    Good luck, face tatoos.

  42. Algonquin J. Calhoun says:

Oh, and Lord Johnson, that is the reason people don’t hire tattood people. Because they are as stupid as you to say you would kill someone. Dumb. Fucking. Tatood.
    Idiot.
