Some artist told me to use A&D ointment. Another told me not to use A&D ointment and to use lotion instead. And then another told me to use the most expensive Aveeno I could find. Seems the right way to someone else the the wrong way to another. So what’s IS the best way to take care of a tattoo?

I can not say that there is a best way, only preferred ways. my second to last tattoo i used a&d, it really did not work very well it was slow and smelly.
The last tattoo from a different artist told me to use eucerin aquaphor or it’s generic. The wash the tattoo with sent free antibacterial soap three times a day then to lightly rub in the lotion a very tiny amount goes a long way. With the eucerin aquaphor my tattoo never scabbed or itched. It healed very quickly. I will never use anything other than the eucerin aquaphor, I picked up the generic from Walgreens.
Hope your art heals well.
I have 13 tats and am working on finishing my sleeves. I’ve used everything my artist’s have recommended and have gotten a routine that works for me.
Provon medicated soap; available online via Steel Navel and some tat shops.
Burt’s Bees Rescue Ointment: organic, available under $5 at Target, CVS etc.
Lubriderm or Gold Bond lotion
I wash the tat 3-5 times a day with Provon for the first 3-4 days. Pat it dry and put on Burt’s. When it starts to itch a bit, I wash it 2 times a day and switch to Lubriderm. Keeping it moist till itching it gone.
I use sunblock (after tat is healed) and am never out in the sun w/o it.
I don’t take baths or swim while my tat is healing. I moisturize all of my ink often.
Never use vaseline. I personally don’t care for A&D because it’s a bit too thick for my taste. Burt’s is thinner and you can apply it more even. New ink needs air to heal as it’s an open wound. Plus, I love the way it smells.
I’ve never, ever had a problem. Other creams/ointments I tried are: A&D, Aquaphor, Tattoo Goo, Black Cat, H2Ocean. Always go back to Burt’s and will not try anything else now.
The general consensus of what I’ve heard is to use ointment for about two days. After that put non-scented lotion on it (the non-scented bit is real important), and keep the area clean. That’s what I (and my friends with ink) stick to and it turns out fine. A lot of people have different opinions, but I’d say listen to what YOUR artist tells you first and foremost. If you trust them enough to permanently mark your body, you should trust their aftercare advice as well.
I used unscented Lubriderm. I wouldn’t used A & D since one of the ingredients is fragrance, which can irritate your tattoo… it doesn’t matter if you use the most expensive Aveeno – just make sure it is unscented.
