What Is Needed To Become A Tattoo Artist Or Piercer?

3 Comments 04 February 2010

Im months away from being 17 and I really want to be a tattoo artist and body piercer. Im a pretty good artist but I wouldnt want to limit myself to just tattoos. What can I do to prepare myself for that kind of job? And what could help me with my goal?

I recommend going into studios and meeting owners and such and asking what they suggest. You’ll learn a lot about what you’ll have to do just by talking to people who’re in the body mod industry.

you have to be able to draw..pretty much anything. people will ask for all kinds of crazy tattoo ideas…and also different types of writing/scripts..
get comfortable being up close and personal with people and giving them lots of pain. :P
tattooing someone or piercing someone is only half of it..you have to be a people person..and be able to calm people down, and help them relax.
try to get a job at a tattoo/piercing shop as a desk person or something, just to get used to the environment…or ask if you can be an apprentice and watch the pros.

First off be artistic. If you want to apprentice somewhere good then being “a pretty good artist” won’t work. Make up a portfolio of paintings, drawings, sketches, etc. and bring it in. Good tattoo artist don’t do only tattoos. Where I get tattoos the owner has an art gallery he owns next door as well. They work 11 hours a day, when they aren’t tattooing they’re painting and drawing. This is where I go; http://www.myspace.com/elitetattoogallery
Roxxy does my tattoos, he’s been in magazines and on the discovery channel and he’ll tell anybody to paint, draw, and work on their art.
