What Happens When You Soak A New Tattoo?

7 Comments 23 February 2010

I know you are not supposed to soak your new tattoo in a bath or go swimming after you get it. But why is that? Will the ink not be as bright? or will the colors bleed out? will the tattoo change shape?

When your skin is trying to heal it naturally expells extra ink and that is in the scab even if you don’t see a scab. It’s still there. Soaking a new tattoo can damage the healing skin and pull ink out disfiguring a tattoo. The shape can warp (happened to a friend of mines when she got pushed into a hot tub), have blotchy spots and that will require touch ups after it’s all healed. Soaking a new tattoo can also make it more likely to get infected from bacteria contamination through soft skin. Everything you said and much more can happen. Just don’t do it until any scabbing is gone and the whole surface has stopped itchy or being raised.

it fades. Same thing if you go out a lot in the sun and don’t put high SPF sunscreen on it.
either that, or it will mutate into the shape of a turd…

  3. Major Strife says:

If it’s still at the scabby stage then the scab will soften and soak up water which will cause it to lift and break up, this in turn will pull ink from the skin and will leave faded/patchy colour.

soaking your skin can open up your pores and allow the inks to bleed out or fade.

    Okay… here we go.
Two drops of water on waxed paper. One has color to it, the other is plain. What happens when they touch? The color spreads into both. Same with soaking your tattoo.
So, if you’re soaking your tattoo, the ink just gets leeched out. If there is a scab, it will become gooey, eventually liquefy, and parts will wash out.
Same thing with too much ointment. If you smother your tattoo in ointment, `1- it can’t breathe and 2- the ointment is acting the same as soaking it.
This will cause fading and blotches.

It can blot the ink, its never supposed to soaked in water when first tattooed. Running water is fine, but the rest your should stay away from.
