Tattoo Placement, How To Still Be Professional At Work?

8 Comments 07 February 2010

I am working on the layout, design, and placement of my first tattoo. I really want it on my forearm but I am afraid of it affecting my career. I live in Maryland so it wouldn’t be normal for me to wear long sleeves year-round. Is there anyone here who works in a professional environment and has visible tattoos (I work in IT). Are they accepted, do you think it will be too hard to move up in my career if I have visible ink?

You need to find out if your workplace has a tattoo policy. I work in a hospital, and I’m not allowed to have a visible tattoo. When my full-sleeve is finished, I will have to wear long sleeves year-long. It’s a good thing laboratories are kept cool! :)
If there is not a workplace policy, there is still the question of client acceptance. If most of your clientele are older (50′s or more) or extremely conservative, there would definitely be an issue. If the clientele is young and/or liberal, there would be more acceptance.

it really depends on ur job, the companie policy, and you manager. I know friends of mine who have many tattoos work and their managers dont care about the visable tattoos. but everwhere i have ever worked does care.
some places want will make some exeptions, like if u wear braceletes over a wrist tattoo, or longer hair over a neck one. I have one on my ankle, that is covered by socks, and im getting one on my upper bicep on sunday, i plan to have it small enough for a short sleeve shirt to cover it but ill wear 1/4 sleeves if i have to.

Are you going to be in this career for the rest of your working life? Will you stay in that office? If so, then ask if its ok, but I doubt it will be. My tattoos are on my thighs, And not visible unless I’d like them to be. I work in retail, at the moment, and will be a teacher after school, And I already know that a visible tattoo will not be ok. But I will still be the coolest teacher. Best of luck to you, I must suggest your thighs. Or just wear long sleeves anyway

I’m a teacher and have a very small tat on my ankle. I’ve never had a problem w/ anyone being offended, etc. However, I’ve also worked in other fields and I just think it looks unprofessional to have ink all over yourself. I would suggest putting it somewhere where it can be hidden while working, but you can show off when not. Plus, think about when you are 80 years old, are you going to want it showing then? LOL Can you imagine all us 20-30 year olds today that are totally inked up, what will they look like in 50 years. ROFL.

Tattoos are starting to be acceptable now than 10 years ago. I would get it where you want to, your body.
Ask your boss if you are afraid. I asked mine ( I work in Childcare and have them on my legs and wrists) she said it was fine, the parents would have to deal. The parents never said anything…..

I personally think that tattoos are not okay in a professional environment. I have several and they are all on my hips, back, feet, so they don’t show.
