I got the lower left side of my lip done. I just got it done on the 28th of November. I currently have a flat back post/stud or whatever. It keeps hitting my teeth some and the top of my gums. I would like to avoid damage to my teeth and gums as much as possible.
My question is should I wait till my lip is fully healed before
I ask my piercer to change my piercing to something that will
not hit my teeth as much.
I’ve been told I should have gotten a beaded lip ring
instead of the flat-black piercing.
If anyone would care to share some advice that would be greatly appreciated.

It’s best if you can wait until it heals. However, if it’s really bothering you (or damaging teeth) you could probably get it changed. (I’ve changed jewelry before something has completely healed)
I noticed something the other day I’d never seen before (I don’t shop for jewelry much.. so it may not be that new). They have labret studs that instead of having a “disc” inside the lip have a little dome. It looks like would be more comfortable. However, I only saw that in acrylic studs, not metal. You could mix an acrylic stud with a metal ball though.
if the stud you have in is bothering you, i suggest going to the piercer and asking them to change it.. i had a similar issue with my ankle piercing, the bar was larger than normal to allow for swelling during the healing period, but i kept hitting it. my piercer was able to change the bar without risking the hole closing or any foreign bodies getting into it causing an infection. its now healed and i havnt hit it or had any problems since. at the very least i suggest talking to the piercer before doing anything. they are the professionals
you just got it three days ago….your just not used to it being there yet as to why it keeps hitting ur teeth….takes a bit to get used to and control it, when i got mine (the long bar), it was always getting caught between my teeth when i would eat, then got used it after a short time…….but ya you should wait till it’s fully healed before you change it, then change it whenever you want
When I first got my labret pierced i had the same problem. I was afraid to eat or smile or laugh cause it kept bumping my gums lol. It’s just cause it’s new and you’re not used to it yet. Give it some more time and it’ll change.
I would wait until it is healed before changing it. Make sure you are cleaning it the way the piercer told you too! Take Care!
yes wait till your piercing is healed then change it out as often as you like
If your lip isn’t’ swollen anymore, you can change to a shorter bar. That will hit your teeth less often. You should go back to the place that you got it pierced though. Also, you shouldn’t use a ring until your lip is healed b/c while your lip is healing a ring will make a “groove” in your lip and make your hole bigger than it should be. Personally, I think the studs (flat-back as you have called them) are less damaging to your teeth. The reason the one you have is hitting your teeth is because it’s longer to allow for swelling.
After your lip has healed, the absolute best ones to use are the plastic studs. The do not damage your teeth at all and they are flexible so they are more comfortable. The only problem with the plastic is that plastic ages and so you have to buy a new one every 2-3 months, but I just buy them off the internet at whole sale (like 50 of them) and change them often. You can reuse the jewels; you just have to throw the plastic stud away after a while.
You will have to wait until it’s healed, sounds like it was placed a little off unfortunately :S..
BUT, in the meantime, head to your drugstore and ask for “dental wax” (they don’t always keep it out, I’ve always had to ask before).. It’s basically the wax they give you when you get braces to cover any sharp spots. Use that either over the back of your lip ring or on your teeth where the back is rubbing, and it’ll stop it from causing damage until you can get it changed.
Usually you can’t change it yourself until it’s fully healed (like 2 months), but a piercer can do it for you after 2 week (longer is of course always better.. so 2-3 weeks).. You can’t do it yourself in that time (or shouldn’t) because the piercers things are clean, and you can avoid infection. It also REALLY hurts to do it yourself because its hard to get it in straight and you’ll tend to go REALLY slow, where the piercer can just shove it in straight causing less damage.
They’ll usually charge 10 dollars at most to change it for you, SOMETIMES they’ll do it for free if you go back to the shop you got it done.
I know the place i go charges 5 dollars and that includes jewelry.
So head back in 2 weeks to get it changed, and in the meantime, get some dental wax!
The reason it’s hitting your teeth is probably because your labret is too long. It’s perfectly fine, piercers put longer labret than you normally need because your lip swells up and if its regular size it wouldn’t heal easily. Just wait until your piercing is fully healed and when you can change the jewelry and get a shorter stud if you need. They also have labrets with rubber backs so they cause less damage to gums and teeth.
