I suggest A. a smaller ball and possibly B. a plastic ball as well. I had the same problem with the metal ball, switched to plastic and it felt much better.

Make sure you have the smallest bar you can...with 1-2mm free. Try smaller balls too. Or flat ends should definitely help ( http://www.bodyjewelleryshop.com/online_… )...you could make just the underneath one flat if it's the bottom gum that hurts. It could be that the piercer pierced your tongue too far forward. If it still hurts, definitely take it out. Then get it re-pierced if you like further back. My piercing is far back an never comes into contact with my gums really. Sorry it's hurting - I hope it gets better!

i had this problem also shortly after getting my tongue pierced, it was because the bar you first get is very long to allow for the swelling of your tongue. you should get a shorter bar, also try a barbell with plastic balls.
the plastic ones get scratched from your teeth easily though, but its better the balls instead of the enamel of your teeth.
the plastic is also isnt nearly as abrasive on your gums as the normal steel barbells.
Also never ever get a bar with glass balls, i once ate glass because i chomped thru one of the balls.
