earlier today i went and got my nipples pierced. the experience went well, quite a bit of pain but overall it was well worth it. my question is this: on my way out the piercer told me not to wash it with and soaps or salt or anything, he told me just when i take a shower everyday to run it under the warm water and move the piercing back and forth for a minute and thats it. this confuses me, i thought piercings had to be cleaned? someone please help! i really dont want it to get infected..

When it comes to piercings, there are several schools of thought:
1. Antibacterial Soap. People who practice this think that using antibacterial soap will kill the germs in piercings, allowing it to heal without threat of infection. Also, gentle soap cleansing will help removal of crusties.
2. Sea Salt Soaks. Use sea salt (not regular, sea salt is more pure) and water to mix a solution no saltier than your tears. Apply as a soak for thirty minutes. This solution, via osmosis, draws out all impurities and such, as well as kills germs and soaks off crusties.
3. LITHA (Leave It The Hell Alone). This thought (that your piercer obviously subscribes to) logics that when you have a wound, you wouldn’t go and pick at it and dab stuff on it and such. You would clean it via water and let it heal. So nothing but water to clean a piercing. [I do this too- I never used anything on some of my piercings, and they turned out fine. The body is wonderful]
It’s personal preference, is all. Any and all are fine, just be consistent.
When I got my nipples pierced I did a combination of sea salt soaks and LITHA. You shouldn’t push the barbell/ring back and forth or move it around because that just opens the wound back up. I didn’t touch mine at all with my hands unless absolutely necessary (like I got caught on something haha). I just take a sea salt soak in a cup and hold the nipple piercing inside, so the warm water loosens up crusties and I don’t have to use my fingers to manipulate the piercing. It healed very very quickly this way.
