I’ve been wanting my lip pierced for so long, and my mum is allowing me to do it =] but the thing is i just got my braces off today and i love my teeth they are so perfect =] my question is that would my lip piercing cause damage to my teeth or even my gums? I’ve been told many things that they chip away at your teeth and wear out your gums and stuff. does anyone know what the risks are if i get my lip done? has anyone every had this problem happen to them or even witnessed it? thanks so much =]

Hi there
Yep, teeth/gum problems are the more notable problems that can arise from a Lip piercing. You could expect to see gum receeding, tooth errosion, the wearing of tooth enamel…sometimes even gaps between teeth. HOWEVER, although this problems can occur, there are actually ways to stop this/minimalise this.
1.) Like you mentioned, the higher up the lip piercing the better- because yes, it can completely avoid your teeth. Just let your piercer know that this is what you want.
2.) You can buy Bioflex jewellery to wear in your lip piercing. This is a similar material to rubber. This is also less harsh on your teeth then metal. Even if bioflex scrapes against your teeth it’s unlikely to do to much damage whereas metal can be very damaging.
3.) A good mouthwash/toothpaste that helps promote healthy gums and helps with enamel is good to stock up on, just to make your gums that much stronger.
So, really there doesnt have to be a problem if you are educated about it- which you now are =) I have snakebites and they have never given me any teeth problems. I’ve had one for nearly two years now, and the other for nearly a year.
Good luck! & i hope I helped you =)
the metal, sitting against your teeth is NOT healthy for them. (just ask a dentist) but i have my lip pierced, (for just over a month now) and my tounge pierced for almost a year, and so far so good.. my advice is if you just spent all the time and money getting braces, dont get your lip pierced. atleast not yet. wait and see if you really want it bad enough to ruin your perfect pearly whites..
I don’t think there are any risks, if you get it done at a good place (like, not Claire’s, lol). You just have to be careful for a while ;]
You should get snakebites because they are cool and I don’t think they would damage your teeth/gums. Lol
Good luck ! =]
EDIT :
Uhh ok…
Well all I know is that my sis was in the same situation as you and she was totally fine!
So it probably depends on the person =]
i used to have my lip pierced, and it did no damage what so ever. with some people, it irritates the gums and the only way i could see it chipping your teeth is if you are constantly taking your lip and smashing it against your tooth
xD
GET UR LIP DONE WITH A STUD AND THEN CHANGE IT OUT TO A RING AFTER ITS HEALED ENOUGH.
AND DO NOT PLAY WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
THAT SCREWS UP UR TEETH SO MUCH.
AND ONCE IT HEALS UPO U CAN LEAVE THE RING OUT FOR A COIUPLE HOURS AND GIVE UR GUMS A BREAK
my ex had awesome teeth. them got his lip done and about 2 years later he had a gap in his teeth where the ring would lay. it didn’t look pretty. but ask a pro.
go to professional they give you nice tip
