Ok I have a question about lip piercings, I am thinking about getting one done but I was wondering is there a way to prevent it from get infected and swollen? Do I just have to wash it everday after I eat and drink and stuff like that?
Ok this question is for people who HAVE lip piercings
Do lip piercings ruin your teeth and gums? And if so is there a way to prevent it from the piercing to ruin your teeth and gums? I heard that if you dont play with it your teeth will be fine is that true?
And is there a different from a loop and stud? Like does one ruin your teeth/gums and the other one doesnt? I was thinking about just getting a loop.

1. You can’t really prevent it from getting swollen. Only a very small percentage of people don’t experience post-piercing swelling.
2. You can prevent infection by making sure you are pierced by a professional in a clean and reputable tattoo and body piercing establishment. The piercing must be done using the proper needle under aseptic conditions. Other ways the avoid infection are not touching your jewelry unless you are cleaning the piercing (and only then after washing your hands thoroughly) and following the aftercare instructions your piercer gives you. Piercings don’t magically become infected for no reason. Bacteria must be introduced to the wound and that happens when people touch their piercing, particularly with unclean hands.
3. Any oral piercing carries a slight risk of gum and tooth damage.
The ways to prevent infection are pretty simple, you go to a good clean shop and follow their aftercare instructions to the LETTER. Even following that you may still get an infection, it happens, it’s a possible risk of piercing. Be sure you completely understand ALL aftercare instructions, including what to do if you suspect an infection. As for gum and tooth damage, yes, it’s a risk, again you can work to minimize it but it’s still a possibility. You need to check daily for signs of damage and remove the piercing ASAP if you think damage is developing. Playing with it is bad (especially while healing) but not playing with it won’t in itself keep damage from happening. Honestly, from what I’ve heard, hoops are more prone to causing damage than flat backs, since they generally rub more.
You should also take these concerns to your piercer and talk to them about it.
I’ve got my bottom lip, left side pierced about 6 months ago. The person who pierces your lip will give a layout of the cautions. Most important would be to wash the pierced area (everyday too) after every meal. They give (usually) certain alcohol swabs, and a bottle of alcohol to clean it. They usually show you how to. The pain is pretty bad and so is the bleeding, but its worth it, and the bleeding stops about 3 days after. You MUST leave your piercing in for 6 months at least, no changes or swaps or piercings till your used to the current one.
Personally I thought it was a great choice, my family ended up liking it too. Clean it daily and after EVERY meal, don’t switch piercings, and you’ll be fine.
Good Luck, you’ll love it! :]
First of all, the rumors are true. The metal from both the stuff and the loop will chip away at your teeth. I have snakebites. I would know. Lmao. If you don’t play with it, it will just take a bit longer for your teeth to get ruined. That’s all. And just rinse your mouth with a mixture of half mouthwash and half water, twice a day. once in the morning. once at night. After you eat, swish some clean water around the ring to make sure nothing is stuck in it.
The swelling will go down in a few days, but it takes about a week to go completely down. Try not to play with it while it’s healing. Try your best not to touch it. But, wash your hands with warm water and soap, then make sure the loop or stud will turn, just to be sure the hole isn’t closing itself on the post on the ring. That would be bad. Very bad. Lol. It’s never happened to me before though so you should be fine.
Just remember. Clean it twice. Swish with water when you eat. DONT TOUCH!
(: Hope I helped, and sorry that this is soooo long and boring! xD
I have a lip piercing. I’ve had 3 altogether, only one at the moment and I just got it done 2 days ago.
It will swell for 2-4 days after the piercing is done and it WILL be quite sore. But it won’t be unbearable, at all.
Getting it done with a stud instead of a hoop will help with healing and swelling. I’ve had it done with a hoop twice and a stud once and by far the stud has been the best.
To keep it from infection:
Mouthwash after eating or drinking ANYTHING.
Avoid gum for a bit.
No kissing or oral sex.
No swimming in hot tubs, whirlpools, and lakes/rivers.
Wash it 2-3 times daily with bactine or Sea Salt, but Bactine supposedly works better and isn’t as harsh, Sea Salt tends to dry skin.
Wash it 3-4 times daily with plain Dial soap, no fragrances or ANYTHING added, on the outside of the piercing, not the inside.
Go to a good place to get it done, make sure they’re clean and have experienced piercers. And make sure they don’t just pull their jewelry out of a box or compartment full of other jewelry. Make sure they jewelry is clean and sterilized.
I’ve had my piercings for…
#1: 5 months,
#2: 9 months
#3: 2 days
NO tooth or gum damage at all and I even have a tendency to bite or twist my piercing with my teeth and tongue.
Though my dentist accidentally sucked my stud up with the spit-sucker thingy once.
Studs are better, as I said already.
I hope I helped. =]
ive had my lip pierced, bottom left side.
it didnt hurt at all, it was a pinch for a litrally a second. i suck with pain and it didnt hurt me, so thats saying alot.
it only bled for about a minute straight after i got it done.
mine didnt swell on the day, the next morning it was a tiny bit swollen, but then that night it swelled HEAPS, my piercer didnt put a longer bar in to compensate for swelling so atm, my lip is swelled as, and the bars becoming to small!
lol
i just had my lip pierced a little over a week ago and it didn’t hurt at all when i got it done it took like 2 minutes for him to do it too and i got the ring but now i think im regretting getting the ring instead of stud because it does get very irritating i love the look of it but it just gets in the way and i have a question if anyone can answer it is it typical for your lip to get stuck alot and when u try to move it it really hurts i hope this doesnt mean infection i always use bactine and salt water every time i eat, before i go to bed,and when i get up everyday but i did get in the hot tub once please comment back thanx
First of all, NEVER use alcohol or bactine on a piercing. If you are using a mouthwash with alcohol dilute it half and half with water. Wash after everytime anything enters your mouth other than water.. For the outside the only things that should be used are unscented, uncolored antibacterial soap and non iodized sea salt. If you need to make the solution yourself it is NO MORE THAN 1 TEASPOON PER CUP OF WARM WATER. Adding more or less will not promote healing. The outside should be cleansed 2-3 times daily and no more than that.
There is also no need to rotate or move your jewelry. This imformation given does not help in healing and can possibly pull the crusties that form into your piercing. Wait until you clean it to touch your piercing and do not pick at anything that may have formed on it.
You should go back to your piercer in about 2 weeks, no less, to change your piercing to a shorter length. Of course after this swap it is better not to keep changing out your piercing as it can lead to unnecessary irritation. I have a few friends that are piercers and they say that studs tend to heal slightly quicker/better than rings for the initial piercing but either is fine to use. It really depends on how your body heals more than anything.
Obviously damage to your teeth and gums will most likely occur. It can be reduced by being placed properly by the piercer and wearing the correct jewelry.. and of course not playing with it too much. I’m not sure if there is much of a difference between studs and hoops as I’ve never had anything other than studs in my lip piercings.I would have to assume the hoops would damage slightly more though. You can look into vertical lip piercings to prevent tooth damage all together. ( I have a vertical labret, it looks quite cute and is definitely more unique) Look at a few pictures, you may like the look better than a regular lip piercing =).
Obviously by the day after there will most likely be lots of swelling, though depending on your body the reaction may not be as harsh.
BIRTHDAY DIXON: This also happened to me. The only reason for the sticking is crusties getting stuck on the piercing. When they are pulled into the skin it is quite painful. Make sure you keep up washing your piercings and soaking off all of the crusties that may form. Do not pick at them though! I would personally take out the bactine from your routine as I’ve never heard of using it before and I have the feeling it may be drying out your piercing. Just do your sea salt soaks and wash with unscented, uncolored antibacterial soap. Hopefully by now your problem has subsided but just in case someone else ran into this with the same question I thought I would reply =)
