Basically, me and my older brother have always said this that I was going to get a carp tattoo on my back, and he was going to get a dragon (because of the age thing).
We decided a while back that instead of just getting someone here to do it, we would travel to japan and get an authentic tattoo artist to do them. Any ideas as to how much this would cost?

Well, I have no idea what the rates are for tattoos in Japan, but I can tell you that a whole back piece in Japanese style has a lot of detail and will take around 20-30 hours of total time to complete. And you’d be hard-pressed to have sessions over 6 or 7 consecutive days since it would almost impossible to have such stamina. So unless you’re also prepared to spend several weeks in Japan (which will cost more than the tattoo), it will be very difficult. An authentic Japanese tattoos are done with a hand-poking method which is much slower than a modern tattoo machine.
There are many artists around the world that specialize in Asian style tattoos without needing to go to Japan.
…you do realize that full-back irezumi are linked to the yakuza, right?
But if you really want one, it’ll take tens of thousands of dollars and several long tattoo sessions to get one.
you really need to ask horiyoshi III about this .
No less than $9,842 and no more than $104,981.
I am sitting in Tokyo. I just had my first design session with a famous Japanese tattoo artist. I am looking at 24-30 hours of work over 4-6 weeks (2 days – 2 weeks to heal, 2 days, 2 weeks to heal, etc). Plan on hanging out here for a while. No shortcuts either.
Approximate cost before the work starts – 420,000 – 550,000 Yen. You can do the conversion at current exchange rate. $4-6 grand USD
Oh yeah – that is only for 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire area of my back. Good luck…..
