How Many Nights Should I Cover A New Tattoo?

3 Comments 29 January 2010

I got a new small tattoo (my first) on my leg and the tattoo artist recommended I cover it with Saran wrap the first night I go to bed to keep it clean. How long should I do this? I was so excited to be done, I don’t remember his instructions to a tee! Love the tattoo though and want to care for it properly!

First off…never use bacitracin like the other girl said. It draws out color. Use only a & d ointment or non scented lotion. And you can cover your tattoo at night with saran wrap as long as it is clean and moisturized first. My boyfriend covers his like that at night when he gets a new one so that the lint off the sheets doesnt get on it and it doesnt leave color on the sheets.. but only for the first few nights. And I am sure that it is ok for him to do this as he is a tattoo artist and knows how to care for them properly.

Your tattoo’s not really supposed to be covered for longer than the first hour or two, at least that’s what both of my artists told me and what my friends’ artists told them.
As far as aftercare, for the first few days wash it several times a day then put on the lotion (bacitracin or whatever he gave you). After a few days you can start washing it only once or twice a day, but make sure you keep putting the lotion on every few hours or whenever it starts to feel dry for the first couple weeks. Don’t expose it to any sunlight if you can help it, and for the rest of your life make sure you put sunscreen on it every time it’s visible when you go out. Good luck!

Don’t recover your tattoo with Saran Wrap.
