How Bad Does A Tattoo Really Hurt To Get?

10 Comments 24 February 2010

How bad does one hurt, medium-sized, on your upper back, right below the back of your neck? Have you ever had one done after numbing gel was applied? Is there any risk of getting hepatitus or any other disease from getting one done, let’s say, in a big city tattoo parlor, like in San Diego?

I got my first one on my upper shoulder area a few months ago. It’s about the size of a fist. It was painful but I was sunburned and like another comment stated it feels like a sunburn really. I want more but I will make completely sure that it’s not over a sunburn already.
I asked to lie down because he wanted me to leave my hands at my side, the vibrations going down my arm was unbearable it was easier to relax lying down.
You just need to check out the parlor and make sure they are reputable, don’t just walk in any random shop.
Good Luck, they are addictive so I hope you don’t mind getting more later. :)

I got my first tattoo two weeks ago. I got it on my upper back/shoulder blade area, and it’s fairly large (5″x8″) and full color. 90 minutes to do.
The outline hurt less than the inside – it felt like someone was dragging a needle along my skin. It wasn’t unbearable though, because I was really committed to getting it done and figured, once it got started, I wasn’t going to stop partway through. The shading, which some people alleges to hurt less, actually hurt more because there was more activity in one place rather than moving on to new skin quickly, like in the outline. The shading was more like a burning sensation. But it was bearable. And that was all without numbing gel.
Where you get it done is irrelevant, except for how good their sanitization practices are. Google tattoo safety and you’ll see a lot of guidelines that you should look for. Good luck!

well when i got my tattoo below the neck it didn’t hurt one bit. it actually made me feel a lot better after i got it. i didn’t use any thing to make it numb or any thing but i was stressed out before and was feeling like a new man after words.
as for big city like san diego, l.a., chicago, or new york. you have the same risk as a little city does. you have to see how they do everything from one time use only products and what they will do in front of you. i like when they open a new needle and a place or two i saw had more than just new needles. but make sure they are secure with the health department and use one time only ink, needles, and tubes.

It’s more of a burning sensation than actual pain kind of like a sunburn. Your upper back does hurt more than say your arm or leg (I found that out the hard way). Numbing gel is a big joke most artist laugh when people ask for it. You can get hepatitis and other diseases from dirty tattoo parlors. It’s something you really have to scope out and research…

Some people claim to feel nothing but pressure or a slightly irritating feeling and nothing more. Some claim that it is “annoying”. Others admit that it is quite painful but not totally unbearable. How it feels depends on the person. Each person, and how their body tolerates pain, is different. None will report the same exact sensation.

I got a tattoo on my wrist.. and seriously it doesn’tt hurt nearly as bad as you think it will. i’ve never heard of the numbing gel so i didnt use that but it hurt for about a minute and after that it was just a light burning.

stick a charged 9 volt battery on ur tongue
than times it by about 5, that’s what i reckon it feels like anyways, not really hurting tho

it feels like a cat scratch. i think numbing stuff would affect the tattoo.
